Maintenance of wooden cabins and saunas

Wooden cabins and saunas are popular solutions for a countryside or garden, serving as a delightful addition to the home environment. If you own a house, a cozy and small wooden cabin nearby can serve as a guesthouse or a separate space for work or hobbies. Due to the fact that small-sized wooden cabins do not require a building permit, their popularity is steadily increasing.

Well, without a sauna, for many of us, the weekend is unimaginable, especially during the cold season.

However, like any building, wooden cabins and saunas also require regular maintenance to ensure their longevity and preserve both their appearance and functionality. Here are a few tips for their maintenance:

  • External cleaning: It is recommended to regularly clean wooden structures from dust, dirt, and other accumulated impurities. This can be done with a broom or brush, and for deeper-seated dirt, you can use a high-pressure washer, depending on the type of surfaces.
  • Roof maintenance: Wooden cabins have roofing, so it is essential to perform periodic checks on the roof covering. It is recommended to inspect whether it is damaged and if there are any signs of water permeability. If you notice a leak, promptly address and fix it.
  • Wood protection: Wood is sensitive to rain, sunlight, and other weather conditions. Using wood-specific protective measures such as varnish, resin, or other protective products can ensure that the wood remains strong, durable, and long-lasting.
  • Sauna interior maintenance: If you have a wooden sauna, more attention needs to be given to interior maintenance. After each sauna use, wipe surfaces free of moisture and sweat to prevent the growth of mold and mildew. Also, regularly inspect and maintain the stove or sauna heating system.
  • Wooden floor care: If there are wooden floors in the sauna or cabin, be cautious with water. Avoid large spills and use special moisture-resistant rugs to protect the wooden floors.
  • Winter care: It is essential to ensure that wooden cabins and saunas are properly prepared for winter if they will not be used for an extended period. Make sure there is no water left in the pipes, and all pipe joints are protected from freezing.
  • Attention to details: Regularly inspect windows, doors, porch furniture, and other equipment. If you notice damaged or non-functional mechanisms, promptly repair or replace them.
  • Regularly check wooden supports and foundations to ensure they are not rotten or damaged. If you notice any issues, perform necessary repair work without delay.
  • Consider the manufacturer’s instructions: Always adhere to the maintenance instructions provided by the manufacturer to maintain the warranty and ensure that the structure is safe and durable.

By performing regular maintenance and following these tips, you can ensure that your wooden cabins and saunas remain sturdy, safe, and cozy for a long time.
